Annual Conference
An early Monks Media project created for Matriarch Marketing at a formative moment in the agency’s own brand journey, bringing the team together through conference programming, recognition design and a location-led Durban team build.
Highlights Reel
Some of the clearest creative decisions happen when the constraints are already defined.
The Matriarch Marketing Annual Conference was one of Monks Media’s earliest major corporate projects, developed at a formative moment for both businesses.
Matriarch had recently evolved from Hot Stuff Promotions into a new agency identity and needed an internal experience that could bring the team into that next chapter together.
The venue was confirmed. The timeline was short. The budget was practical.
Our job was not to disguise those realities.
It was to use them well.
Hosted at Durban’s Blue Waters Hotel, the conference was built around internal alignment, recognition and renewed momentum.
The theme, Ready. Steady. Grow., gave the programme a simple sense of forward movement, but the venue itself presented a strong visual language through its architecture, central water feature and existing finishes.
Rather than forcing an unrelated decorative concept into the space, the design responded to what was already there.
Vivid green linen, illuminated foliage, clear perspex, glass and restrained tabletop styling introduced the language of growth while allowing the architecture of the room to remain visible.
The result demonstrated an approach that still informs our work today:
Design does not always begin by asking what needs to be added. Sometimes it begins by understanding what is already there.
The inaugural Ellie Awards became one of the most important elements of the conference.
Named in reference to the elephant at the centre of the new Matriarch identity, the awards allowed recognition to become part of the agency’s evolving internal language.
They were deliberately not treated as standard trophies.
Ceramic and perspex were combined to create pieces that felt contemporary, crafted and connected to the material language used throughout the gala environment.
The awards therefore did more than recognise performance on the night. They became physical objects employees could take back into their working lives, carrying the new identity beyond the conference itself.
A separate commemorative piece was created to recognise Kerry’s 20 years of service, allowing long-standing contribution to sit alongside the celebration of future growth.
The following day, the conference moved out of the ballroom and into Durban itself.
Rather than importing a generic team-building format, the immediate surroundings became the course.
Mini Town, sand sculpture artists, promenade landmarks and Durban’s iconic spiced pineapple became part of an Amazing Race-style experience along the Golden Mile.
The activity encouraged collaboration, problem-solving and movement while giving the conference a sense of place that could only have belonged to Durban.
It also changed the energy completely.
After the formality of strategy, awards and recognition, the team had an opportunity to reconnect through something active, informal and shared.
The Matriarch Annual Conference became an early marker of the way Monks Media would continue to approach experience design: working between brand identity, physical environment, human behaviour and practical constraints rather than treating them as separate considerations.
It was not simply a conference, gala dinner and team build.
It was an internal brand experience designed to help a newly repositioned business recognise where it had come from and create momentum around where it wanted to go next.

The constraints defined the brief. They did not have to define the ambition.
