Founder and Creative Director, Monks Media
For more than twenty years, I have worked somewhere between an idea and the moment it becomes real. Events were where I started. They taught me how people move through spaces, how brands behave when they leave the page, how budgets change ideas, how suppliers become collaborators and how quickly a beautiful concept falls apart if nobody has thought about what happens next. Monks Media grew out of that experience, but it no longer fits neatly inside the word events. Neither do I.
I studied Drama and Performance Studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, which in hindsight probably explains more about my career than a conventional marketing degree ever could. I learned to think about audiences, narrative, space, performance and what happens when an idea has to exist in front of real people. The years that followed were spent learning how experiences actually get made: production, décor, procurement, budgets, suppliers, sponsorships, clients, deadlines and all the wonderfully unglamorous machinery required to turn an idea into something people can walk into. Over time, the questions became bigger. Not simply what should we make, but why are we making it? Who is it for? What should happen because it exists? What can continue after everyone has gone home? That shift eventually became Monks Media.

I have never thought creativity begins with having an idea. For me, it begins with paying attention: researching the subject, understanding the audience, noticing what feels wrong and being curious enough to ask whether there might be another way. I respect a brief, but I have never treated it as the edge of the idea. Sometimes the thing that changes the work is remarkably small: a different setting, a shift in perspective, an unexpected collaboration or simply moving something because it does not feel right where it is. Other times it means proposing something I cannot yet prove will work. That uncertainty is part of making. Some ideas work and some do not. We do not always know until we try.
I am interested in the details because people experience the details. A setting is not simply a background. A gift is not simply an object. A photograph, a piece of copy, the way someone enters a room or what happens after they leave it can all change the story being told. Increasingly, that is how I think about creativity: not as decoration around an idea, but as the process of finding the clearest, most interesting way for an idea to exist in the world.
I founded Monks Media in 2017 as an experiential business. Since then, the work has expanded across strategy, creative direction, partnerships, digital platforms, media, content and original properties. What interests me most is rarely a single discipline. It is the relationship between them. An experience can create content. Content can build an audience. A partnership can unlock a new market. A platform can create relationships that continue long after the original event. Sometimes the most useful part of a brief is discovering that the brief is not quite the problem we need to solve.
That is the space I want Monks Media to occupy: somewhere between strategy and making, with enough curiosity to question the problem and enough experience to actually deliver the answer. Along the way, the work has taken me across financial services, automotive, FMCG, retail, luxury, property, hospitality and destination experiences, working with brands and organisations including Standard Bank, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Pernod Ricard, Diageo, Beiersdorf, Edgars, Growthpoint Properties and a number of international luxury houses.
More recently, my focus has increasingly moved towards building platforms rather than moments: ideas that can create partnerships, audiences, content, commercial value and cultural relevance over time. There is still a lot I want to make.
